Building the Ultimate Extension

This high-spec project was overseen by Calibre Building Solutions, a company based in Leigh, Lancashire who specialise in extensions, renovations and new builds. Company director Danny Fogel told us, "We opted for a high level roof on the extension which blended in with their home. The extension was completed with the same rendering and stonework too, to create a seamless design."

The 12-week project was completed in November this year, with Calibre overseeing the build from beginning to end including installation of the windows and roof windows, the fitting out of the inside, electrics, plumbing, decorating and the landscaping outside. An ambitious build that yielded results.

The build team opted for three high-quality Ultima Energy PVC Roof Windows | Dakea Roof Windows for the project, as they were looking for a high-spec finish throughout. "We wanted triple-glazed roof windows for a better U-value, so the room maintains more heat and the added noise technology means rain doesn't disturb when you're inside watching tv. There's a lot of sun on this side of the house too so the tinted glass helps to block the rays," Danny told us. The Ultima Energy has an outstanding U_w parameter of 1.0 W/m² K. This is thanks to the krypton filled pane construction which provides a 46% improvement on heat. It also gives a 50% better noise reduction (38 dB) when compared to standard windows.

"Because of the height of the room, the homeowners aren't able to open the roof windows manually so we installed Electric Roof Window Opener | Make Your Skylights Electric so when you need to open the windows in the summer you don't need to get a pole out, just flick a switch on the wall," Danny explains. Dakea sent their Technical Support Michael Clayton to the site to support the installation of the electric openers. "It was great to have someone come out and oversee it. It was really helpful", says Danny.
